Mattingly Charities’ held its 5th annual event benefiting underserved youth on December, 4, 2019 at Evansville’s City View at Sterling Square.

At this SOLD OUT event, our guests enjoyed learning more about our foundation and mission, listening to anecdotes and stories from special guests Willie McGee, Don Mattingly, and Steve Lyons, and had an impromptu sing-along with country music songwriting great Don Schlitz. The Find A Way event hosted over 200 attendees for an entertaining evening to raise funds and awareness for Mattingly Charities and the organizations that it supports.

The event also included live and silent auctions with one-of-a-kind items to benefit Mattingly Charities.

With the help of generous event attendees and matching grants from Mattingly Charities and the William E. Schmidt Foundation, over $80,000 was raised to support and expand the Jacobsville Kid Zone program at the Dream Center Evansville.

Willie McGee is a former professional baseball player and current member of the St. Louis Cardinals Major League coaching staff. He is a beloved figure among Cardinals fans and a member of the St. Louis Cardinals Hall of Fame.

He spent the majority of his 18-year career playing for the St. Louis Cardinals, helping them win the 1982 World Series with his outstanding catches and a pair of key homers. Willie McGee is also a four-time All-Star (1983, 1985, 1987, 1988) and accumulated 2,254 hits during his career.

Steve Lyons is a former professional baseball player who currently works as a television sportscaster for the New England Sports Network (NESN), the official network of the Boston Red Sox. As a broadcaster, Steve has been awarded three national EMMY awards for his work.

He played in Major League Baseball (MLB) for four teams over a period of nine seasons, including four stints with the Boston Red Sox.

Steve is also an author and actor, best known for his roles in For Love of the Game, The Fan and Arli$$.

Don Schlitz is among the most influential and beloved songwriters in the history of country music, and in 2017, he was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame.

His chart-topping songs — among them “The Gambler,” “On the Other Hand,” “Forever and Ever, Amen,” “He Thinks He’ll Keep Her”, “The Greatest,” and “When You Say Nothing At All” — are touchstones and inspirations. His works have been recorded by Kenny Rogers, Randy Travis, The Judds, The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Tanya Tucker, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Keith Whitley, Alison Krauss, and many others.

His fifty Top Ten singles include twenty-four Number One country hits. He has won three CMA Song of the Year awards, two Academy of Country Music Song of the Year prizes, two Grammy Awards, and four consecutive (1988-91) ASCAP Country Songwriter of the Year trophies.

Schlitz was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Association Hall of Fame in 1993, and the Songwriters Hall of Fame (with Bob Seger and Gordon Lightfoot) in 2012.
